Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis
Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE) is an important technique in biochemistry and molecular biology used to separate proteins according to their size and charge. It is used to analyse the proteins in a sample, to study any changes in them, and to identify unknown proteins. PAGE works by passing an electric current through a gel containing the proteins. Different proteins will move through the gel at different rates and will separate into bands. The bands can then be analysed to give a detailed picture of the protein composition of the sample. PAGE is a cost-effective and reliable technique and is used routinely in the biomedical and biotechnology fields.
