Overview
Organisms are individual living systems composed of one or more cells that carry out the fundamental processes of life, including metabolism, growth, response to stimuli, reproduction, and adaptation. They range from single-celled bacteria, archaea, and protists to complex multicellular plants, animals, and fungi, and are organized within ecosystems where they interact with one another and their environment. The study of organisms spans their molecular and cellular biology, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary relationships, including how populations change over time through natural selection. Research grouped under this topic addresses microbial, environmental, and evolutionary aspects of living systems. Microbiology and biotechnology studies examine halotolerant and PHB-producing bacterial strains, cyanobacterial and algal applications across agriculture, medicine, and the environment, and probiotic organisms in food products. Environmental and toxicological work investigates pathogenic bacteria from animal sources, the effects of agrochemicals and pollutants on aquatic and terrestrial organisms, and the use of bivalves as bioindicators of pollution. Evolutionary contributions revisit natural selection, Darwinian theory, and interactions between natural nuclear reactors and microbial evolutionary processes. This peer-reviewed literature supports researchers exploring the biology, ecology, and evolution of organisms across the tree of life and their roles in natural and applied systems.
