Overview

Potassium chloride (KCl) is an ionic compound of potassium and chlorine, forming colourless, odourless crystals that are highly soluble in water and dissociate into K+ and Cl- ions. In chemistry it is a common source of potassium and chloride ions for reactions, a supporting electrolyte and ionic-strength adjuster in electrochemistry and analytical procedures, and a reagent in synthetic and separation work. Industrially it serves as a flux in metallurgy and as the primary feedstock for potassium-based fertilisers, where it supplies the potassium that plants require. Physiologically, potassium chloride provides the potassium and chloride ions essential to membrane potential, neuromuscular function, and acid-base and fluid balance, and it is used therapeutically to correct potassium depletion. As a strong electrolyte its solutions are well characterised for conductivity, osmolarity, and ionic behaviour, properties exploited in buffer formulation, electrolyte studies, and cell-culture and physiological media. Related chemical research addresses ionic salts as reagents in nucleoside synthesis, surfactant-mediated cation transport across liquid membranes, and the behaviour of electrolytes in solution. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on inorganic and analytical chemistry, including the properties and applications of ionic salts such as potassium chloride.
