Overview

Neuromuscular diseases are a group of conditions that affect the healthy functioning of the nerves and muscles in the body. These diseases can result in weakness, wasting, and paralysis of the muscles that support bodily movement. There are several types of neuromuscular diseases, including muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, and ALS. Neurological research and therapy explore multiple scientific ways to treat and manage these conditions. In recent times, numerous neurogenic therapies have been developed for neuromuscular disease treatment. These therapies include gene and cell-based therapy, gene editing, stem cell replacement therapy, and drug treatment. Gene therapy aims to target the specific genes responsible for neuromuscular disease and replace or manipulate them to cure the disease. Cell-based therapy involves the transplantation of healthy muscle cells or motor neurons to replace damaged ones. Stem cell therapy is an emerging field that focuses on using stem cells to generate new and healthy tissue to replace damaged ones. Drug treatment options for neuromuscular disease include steroids, immunosuppressive drugs, and molecular-targeted drugs. Steroids are commonly used to suppress inflammation and improve muscle function in patients with neuromuscular disease. Molecular-targeted drugs are a newer advancement that aims to target the specific genetic abnormalities that cause the disease. Furthermore, neurogenic therapy does not always have to be curative. It can also be palliative, with the purpose of improving the quality of life and reducing symptoms of the disease in affected individuals. Some of the palliative treatments used for neuromuscular disease include physical therapy, occupational therapy, breathing assistance, and powered wheelchairs or scooters. In conclusion, with scientific research and various therapy options available, people living with neuromuscular disease have hope for a better quality of life. Ongoing research in neurological research and therapy will keep informing safe and effective mechanisms to improve the longevity of people living with neuromuscular diseases.
