Overview

Brain injury is damage to the brain that disrupts its normal function, with effects that can be temporary or permanent and that may impair cognitive, emotional, physical, and behavioral abilities. It is broadly divided into traumatic brain injury, caused by an external force such as a blow to the head from falls, vehicle collisions, assaults, or sports, and acquired or non-traumatic injury resulting from causes such as stroke, lack of oxygen, infection, or tumors. The severity of brain injury ranges from mild concussion to severe injury with prolonged loss of consciousness, and outcomes depend on the location and extent of damage, the speed of treatment, and rehabilitation. Management spans acute neurosurgical and critical care, medical stabilization, and long-term rehabilitation aimed at restoring function and quality of life. Research published in this journal's network has examined the outcomes and contributing factors of traumatic brain injury, including studies of pediatric patients and of adults treated for head injury, as well as related neurosurgical care for conditions such as extradural hematoma. Such work reflects advances in Neurological Research and Therapy. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to brain injury and its treatment within the broad scope of Neurological Research and Therapy.
