Renin-Angiotensin System
The Renin-Angiotensin system (RAS) is a complex network of proteins and hormones that helps regulate blood pressure. It plays a key role in cardiovascular health and is an important target for treating hypertension and kidney disease. The RAS works by releasing the hormone Renin, which activates a cascade of reactions that lead to the production of another hormone, Angiotensin, which then causes constriction of the blood vessels, raising blood pressure. Drugs that target the RAS can be used to lower blood pressure, improving cardiovascular health and reducing the risk of stroke and heart attack.
