Overview

Pediatric oncology is a branch of medicine which focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and management of cancer in children. It is an important field of medical practice as cancer is one of the leading causes of death in children. Pediatric oncologists use a range of treatments to reduce symptoms, improve quality of life and, in some cases, save lives. A variety of treatments including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted therapies are used to treat pediatric cancers. Improving the outcome of pediatric oncology relies on the early diagnosis, selection of optimal treatment plans and management protocols.
