Overview

Bladder cancer is a malignancy that begins in the tissues of the urinary bladder, the hollow organ that stores urine. It most commonly arises in the urothelial cells lining the inner surface of the bladder, often appearing first as small papillary growths or flat lesions, which may remain confined to the lining or, over time, invade deeper layers of the bladder wall and spread to other parts of the body. Bladder cancer is among the more common cancers in adults, occurs more frequently in older individuals and in men, and is associated with risk factors such as tobacco smoking and exposure to certain industrial chemicals. Common symptoms include blood in the urine and changes in urination. Diagnosis typically involves examination of the bladder, imaging, and tissue sampling, and treatment depends on the stage and grade of the tumor, ranging from local removal and intravesical therapy to surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. Within the scope of this journal's focus on Neoplasms, bladder cancer is studied as one of many tumor types, alongside broader research into how cancer cells develop and behave. Related work in the journal has examined the evolution of solid human tumor cell properties across experimental systems, reflecting interest in the fundamental biology of malignant cells. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to bladder cancer and neoplasia.
