Overview

Settlement patterns refer to the arrangement and distribution of human settlements across the globe. They are largely determined by the availability of resources, climate, topography and a variety of cultural factors. They are important to understand, as they offer insight into the way an area has developed, what resources may be available, and how people have adjusted to, and interacted with their environment. These patterns also help us to better understand globalization and the impact of human activity on the environment. The study of settlement patterns helps us identify issues such as urban sprawl, overcrowding, and resource depletion, which can be addressed to ensure sustainable development.
