Overview

Functional specification is a document that details the requirements to develop a system or software. It is an essential part of the product development process, since it sets the rules and guidelines of how the product should function. It is essentially a structured and detailed explanation of the intended behaviour of a product and its components in order to ensure its efficient and successful development. Functional specifications are necessary in order to ensure that the final product is consistent with user needs, requirements, and expectations. They are also used to provide a clear understanding of the product’s capabilities and limitations, and to support design and testing processes.
