Overview

The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of an object to its height, usually expressed as two measurements separated by a colon. For example, a 16:9 aspect ratio means that for every 16 units of width, there are 9 units of height. Aspect ratios are used to describe the shape of images, photographs, video and computer monitors, but can also be used to describe other shapes and objects. Aspect ratios can be used to ensure that a page, product or image displays correctly on different devices, and are a critical element in the design and development of websites, apps and other digital products.
