Overview

Short term memory is the cognitive process of storing and retaining information for a short period of time, usually a few seconds to a few minutes. Short term memory is important because it is used to temporarily store information that we need to access in order to complete tasks like solving a math problem or recalling the name of someone we just met. It can also help us remember information that we are going to use more than once, like a card game rule. Short term memory is especially important for learning new material, as it helps us remember pieces of information until we can transfer them to our long term memory.
