Overview
Health information exchange (HIE) is the electronic movement of health-related data across organizations. It is based on standards-based technology and allows authorized users to access and share patient information from disparate health care settings, including hospitals, health centers, pharmacies, laboratories, and insurers. HIE is important for improving patient care and population health by allowing information to be easily and securely shared across the health system. It facilitates a coordinated approach to patient care, including the sharing of medical history, which reduces duplication of services and supports continuity of care. HIE also has the potential to support public health initiatives, such as outbreak response, by improving the speed and accuracy of health data exchange.
