Overview
Traumatic injury is physical harm to the body caused by an external force or event, such as a fall, road traffic collision, assault, blast, or penetrating wound. It ranges in severity from minor cuts and bruises to life-threatening damage involving fractures, internal bleeding, organ injury, and head and spinal trauma. Traumatic injuries are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, particularly among young people, and they often require urgent medical attention, surgical intervention, and prolonged rehabilitation. Beyond the immediate physical damage, traumatic injury can have lasting consequences for mobility, independence, and mental health, and outcomes depend on factors such as the location and severity of the injury, the speed of treatment, and the patient's age and overall health. The study of traumatic injury spans prevention, emergency care, surgery, and recovery. Medical and Psychological Trauma publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to physical and psychological consequences of trauma, including work on predicting discharge disposition in geriatric women after traumatic injury and on outcomes of pediatric neurosurgery for extradural hematoma. This page gathers open-access research relevant to traumatic injury and the care and recovery of injured patients.
