Overview

Trauma refers to injury arising from a sudden, forceful, or overwhelming event, encompassing both physical tissue damage and psychological harm. Physical trauma results from mechanical, thermal, or other external forces and includes injuries such as fractures, head and maxillofacial injury, and damage to internal organs, requiring acute assessment and often surgical management. Psychological trauma denotes the emotional and cognitive response to events that overwhelm an individual's capacity to cope, and can give rise to post-traumatic stress symptoms, dissociation, anxiety, and depression. The two domains frequently intersect, as physical injury carries psychological consequences and traumatic stress influences recovery and behaviour. Research in this area examines maxillofacial trauma and its psychological stress, the relationship between trauma-related psychotic reactions and post-traumatic stress symptoms, and the mediating role of alcohol use. Further strands address dissociative amnesia and challenges to therapy, post-traumatic stress disorder in the context of cancer and among healthcare staff, geriatric and surgical outcomes after traumatic injury, and mental stress in vulnerable populations. Work spans clinical management, psychotherapy, and epidemiology. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on medical and psychological trauma, including physical injury, post-traumatic stress, dissociation, and the psychological dimensions of traumatic experience.
