Overview
Bats are mammals of the order Chiroptera, the only mammals capable of true sustained flight, comprising well over a thousand species distributed across nearly every terrestrial ecosystem. They are divided broadly into the larger fruit- and nectar-feeding bats and the predominantly insectivorous, echolocating microbats, and they fulfil important ecological roles as insect predators, pollinators, and seed dispersers, with attendant agricultural and economic value. Their distinctive physiology, including powered flight, longevity, hibernation, and an unusual immune tolerance, makes them a subject of interest in evolutionary biology, ecology, and comparative physiology. Bats are also studied as natural reservoirs for a range of viruses, and the ecology of viral spillover from wildlife to humans, including coronaviruses, has become a prominent theme in disease research. Research touching on this area examines the origins and transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2, the role of animals in the COVID-19 era as sources, victims, and subjects of study, and molecular and evolutionary analyses of coronaviruses across human and animal hosts. The intersection of chiropteran biology, ecology, and zoonotic disease underpins this field. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in mammalian biology and related areas, including work on zoonotic viruses and the animal contexts relevant to emerging infectious disease.
