Submit a Manuscript
Three approved routes into the journal, what to have ready before you start, and what happens once the manuscript arrives.
Routes
Approved submission routes
Use whichever route suits you. They reach the same editorial office and are handled identically.
| Route | Where | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Primary route | ManuscriptZone | The publisher's submission portal. Use this if you want to track the manuscript and correspond through one place. |
| Alternative route | Simple manuscript submission form | A single form, preselected for this journal. Use this for a straightforward submission without an account. |
| Assisted route | [email protected] | The editorial office will help you submit. Use this if you have a question about fit, or if either route above is difficult for you. |
Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript. Submitting the same work twice creates two records and delays it.
Preparation
Have these ready before you start
Full preparation requirements are on the instructions for authors page. This is the short list the submission itself will ask for.
- The manuscript file, with the article type you are submitting under stated on the title page.
- A title page carrying every author's full name, affiliation, ORCID iD where held, and the corresponding author's email.
- An abstract and keywords.
- Figures and tables, each cited in the text, with captions.
- Any supplementary files, named so a reader can tell what each one is.
- The ethics approval reference and the consent procedure, for research with human participants.
- The trial registry name, number and date, for an interventional trial.
- A data-availability statement, for any empirical research manuscript.
- Funding sources and any competing interests, for every author.
- An anonymized version of the manuscript, if you are requesting double-blind review.
Declarations
What you will be asked to declare
- Originality
- That the work is original, is not under consideration elsewhere, and that any overlapping earlier publication or preprint is disclosed with its identifier.
- Authorship
- That everyone listed meets the authorship criteria, that no one who qualifies has been left off, and that all authors have approved the version submitted.
- Ethics and consent
- The approving committee and the consent procedure, and for case material, that documented consent for publication was obtained.
- Privacy
- That identifying detail has been removed, including combinations of detail that would identify a participant in a small setting.
- Interests and funding
- All funding sources, and all financial and non-financial competing interests, for every author.
- Data availability
- Where the data are, or why they cannot be shared.
- AI use
- Any use of an AI tool in preparing the manuscript, with the tool named and the use described. Authors remain responsible for everything in the submission.
- Review model
- Whether you are requesting double-blind review, which is available on request.
After
What happens next
- Acknowledgment. The editorial office confirms receipt and checks that the submission is complete.
- Editorial screening. All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Scope is assessed during initial editorial screening. A scope decision is separate from an assessment of scientific quality.
- Peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- Decision. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. The decision comes with the reviewers' comments and the reasoning.
- Revision. Where revision is invited, respond point by point. Inviting a revision is not a commitment to publish.
- Acceptance and publication. On acceptance the article processing charge is raised; the amount and terms are on the charges page. The article is published open access under CC BY 4.0, with copyright retained by the authors.
Editorial decisions are independent of fees, membership, editorial roles, and any optional author service. Review speed is not sold, and no route through the journal can be purchased.
