Article processing charge
The journal charges once, and only when a manuscript has been accepted.
- Amount
- USD 1,200
- When it applies
- Only after a manuscript has been accepted. Nothing is charged for submitting, and nothing is charged if the manuscript is declined.
- Submission fee
- There is no submission fee.
- Article types
- One charge for all article types. There is no surcharge for length, for color figures, or for supplementary files.
- Currency and taxes
- Charged in US dollars. Any tax that applies in your jurisdiction is shown on the invoice before payment.
- Who pays
- Usually the corresponding author's institution or funder. The editorial office can invoice either directly.

- Editorial handling
- Screening, editor assignment, the management of peer review, and the decision process.
- Production
- Copy-editing, typesetting, proofing and the preparation of the published article.
- Metadata and hosting
- Preparation and distribution of the article's metadata, and hosting the full text open access with no embargo.
- Preservation
- Deposit into the publisher's long-term Portico preservation arrangement.
Independence
Charges and editorial decisions are separate
Editorial decisions are independent of fees, membership, editorial roles, and any optional author service. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
The charge is raised after acceptance by the billing office. Editorial decisions remain independent of payment. Review speed is not sold, and no route through the journal can be purchased. Ability to pay has no bearing on whether a manuscript is accepted.
The journal applies the same editorial and peer-review standards to every manuscript. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Fee relief
If the charge is a barrier
Fee-relief inquiries go to the editorial office before or at submission, and a request has no bearing on the editorial decision. Raising the question early means it is settled before you have invested in a revision.
Membership arrangements, where an author holds one, are described on the membership page. They affect the fee only.
Withdrawal
Withdrawing a manuscript
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.
Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
Billing
How billing works
- Acceptance. The decision is made and communicated independently of payment. The APC invoice is raised after acceptance; fee inquiries may be made before or at submission.
- Invoice. The billing office raises an invoice to the corresponding author, their institution, or their funder, as you direct. Any applicable tax is shown before payment.
- Payment. Settled through the routes named on the invoice.
- Publication. The article is published open access under CC BY 4.0, with copyright retained by the authors.
Questions about an invoice, a purchase order, or an institutional arrangement go to the editorial office, which will route them to the billing office.
