Publishing charges
Article Processing Charges
One charge, stated in full, payable only after a manuscript has been accepted.
The journal is open access: every article is free to read on publication, with no subscription and no reader charge. The article processing charge is what makes that possible.
The charge falls due only after acceptance, and editorial decisions are reached independently of it.

The charge
What authors pay, and when
The figure below is the journal’s article processing charge. It is the only publication charge the journal levies.
Amount
USD 1,800 per accepted article.
At submission
Submission and peer review are free of charge, whatever the outcome.
After acceptance
An invoice is issued once a manuscript is accepted, with payment instructions and the reference details a finance office needs. Pro forma invoices are available for procurement workflows.
Editorial separation
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
Billing is handled separately from editorial assessment, and payment status is withheld from editors.
The review a manuscript receives
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
The model, the reviewers selected and the handling a manuscript receives are the same for every submission.
What it supports
Where the charge goes
The charge covers the work between an accepted manuscript and a permanent, openly available article of record.
Editorial management
Coordinating screening, reviewer selection, correspondence and the decision process for each manuscript.
Production
Copyediting, typesetting, figure handling, and preparation of the full-text formats the article is published in.
Identifiers and metadata
Assigning a DOI, depositing structured metadata, and maintaining the article record over time.
Hosting and preservation
Keeping the article available on the journal platform and committing content to the Portico preservation archive.
Withdrawal
If a manuscript is withdrawn
The publisher’s withdrawal policy applies to every journal and is reproduced here in full.
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.
Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
Funding
Paying the charge
Most charges are met from a grant or an institutional fund. The editorial office can supply whatever documentation that requires.
Grant budgets
Publication charges are an eligible expense under many funders. Invoices and payment confirmations are provided for grant reporting.
Institutional funds
A library or research office can be invoiced directly. Supplying the billing contact early avoids delays after acceptance.
Shared payment
A charge can be split across collaborating institutions where each billing contact is provided.
Limited funding
Authors working without a publication budget are invited to contact the editorial office at [email protected] before acceptance. Any reduction is agreed separately from the editorial assessment.
Next steps
Before you submit
Author requirements are on Instructions for Authors, and the full review and ethics framework on Editorial Policies.
Questions about charges, invoicing or documentation can be sent to the editorial office.
