About the Journal of Skeletal Muscle
The Journal of Skeletal Muscle (JSM) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal of research on skeletal muscle in health and disease. It welcomes all skeletal muscle research, with pathophysiology as a core area, and has been published by Open Access Pub since 2017.
Purpose and readership
From filament to function
JSM serves researchers, clinicians, therapists and educators who need sound evidence on how skeletal muscle develops, works, adapts and fails, and how its disorders can be understood and treated.
JSM publishes research on skeletal muscle in health and disease. The journal covers the field from the molecular machinery of the sarcomere to the performance of whole muscles, with pathophysiology as a core area, and considers work in cells, tissues, animal models and human participants.
Its aims are to publish methodologically sound research on muscle structure, metabolism, development, regeneration, aging, exercise and disease, to strengthen the methods and models on which that research depends, and to make the results freely available to everyone. The journal welcomes contributions from the disciplines that study muscle, including cell and molecular biology, physiology, biomechanics, genetics, nutrition, neuromuscular medicine and rehabilitation science.

Editorial responsibility
The Editor-in-Chief leads the journal's editorial direction and oversees its decisions, supported by an international editorial board of skeletal muscle researchers who handle manuscripts within their expertise and advise on the journal's scope and policies.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. They are independent of the article processing charge and of any fee-relief inquiry. Editors with a conflict of interest are recused from handling the manuscript.
Peer review
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts. JSM is an open-access journal. All articles are freely available on openaccesspub.org from the day of publication, without subscription or registration.
Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0), which permits anyone to read, download, copy, distribute, adapt and reuse the work for any lawful purpose, provided the authors and the original publication are credited. Authors retain copyright in their work and may deposit any version of their article, including the published version, in institutional or subject repositories without embargo.
Preservation and discovery
A lasting, citable record
JSM articles will be deposited in Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive, so that the published record remains available for the long term. Read our preservation policy.
Each article is assigned a Crossref DOI, and article metadata are openly available to scholarly discovery services. The Indexing page lists the catalogs and services in which JSM and its articles are recorded.
