Purpose and readership

Research on the whole pancreas

JPAN serves pancreatologists, gastroenterologists, hepatopancreatobiliary surgeons, oncologists, endocrinologists, radiologists, pathologists and basic scientists who need sound evidence on how the pancreas works and how its diseases are recognized, treated and prevented.

JPAN publishes research on the pancreas in health and disease. The journal considers work on the exocrine and the endocrine pancreas, from anatomy, physiology and disease models to pancreatitis, pancreatic neoplasms, diagnosis, surgery, interventional and medical therapy, and the biology of islets.

Its aims are to publish methodologically sound research that advances the understanding and care of pancreatic disease, to report techniques and observations that other investigators and clinicians can use, and to make the results freely available to everyone who can use them. The Aims and Scope page describes the scope, study designs and eligibility in full.

How editorial decisions are made

Members of the international Editorial Board handle manuscripts within their expertise and advise on the journal's scope and policies. Each manuscript is handled by an editor who has no conflict of interest with it; editors do not take part in the review or the decision on their own submissions.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. They are independent of the article processing charge and of any fee-relief inquiry.

Peer review

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts. The full process is set out in the Editorial Policies.
