Is obesity the question?
The manuscript must address a substantive question about obesity, its determinants or consequences, or its assessment, prevention or management. A focused subgroup or effect-modification analysis can qualify; recording body weight or including participants with obesity alone does not establish fit. The aims and scope page sets out the five core domains, the broader areas, and where the boundaries with nutrition, endocrinology, diabetes, cardiovascular medicine, exercise science, surgery, digital health and basic science run.

Does the design support the claim?
Scope eligibility is decided by subject; publication is decided by method, reporting and interpretation. Weight and body-composition outcomes need the measurement method, the follow-up interval and the number of participants retained at each point.

Is the manuscript prepared to the journal’s requirements?
The instructions for authors page gives the structure, limits and declarations for each article type. Preparing to it before submitting is the single thing that most shortens the time to a first decision.

What to have ready
The files and declarations a complete submission needs.
- Manuscript
- The full text, prepared to the journal’s structure for the article type you are submitting, with figures and tables in place or supplied separately as the instructions set out.
- Title page
- Title, all authors with affiliations and ORCID iDs, the corresponding author’s contact details, and the word count. Where you are requesting double-blind review this information is supplied here rather than in the manuscript: For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.
- Abstract and keywords
- Prepared to the length and structure the instructions give for your article type.
- Figures, tables and supplementary files
- At the formats and resolutions the instructions specify. Supplementary material is submitted with the manuscript, not added later.
- Declarations
- Ethics approval, with the committee and reference number, or the applicable exemption.
- Consent to participate, and written consent for publication where any material is identifiable.
- Trial registration where the study is an interventional clinical trial: Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
- Funding, in full, including grant numbers.
- Competing interests, including any interest in an anti-obesity medication, a device, a bariatric technology, a commercial weight-management product or service, a supplement, or a food or nutrition industry sponsor.
- Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
- Any use of a generative AI tool in preparing the manuscript, naming the tool and what it was used for.
- Cover letter
- A short statement of what the work adds and why it fits the journal. If the manuscript is intended for a special issue, say so here. If you are requesting double-blind review, say so here.
What happens next
The path a manuscript takes, and where you can expect to hear from the journal.
- Acknowledgement The editorial office confirms receipt and checks that the submission is complete. An incomplete submission is returned for the missing items rather than entering review.
- Editorial screening All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. A manuscript that falls outside the scope, or that does not meet the journal’s minimum requirements, is returned at this stage with the reason.
- Peer review Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- Decision Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. You receive the decision with the reviewer reports.
- Revision Where revision is invited, respond to each point and submit the revised manuscript with a point-by-point reply. Revised manuscripts are reassessed by the handling editor and, where the revision is substantial, by the original reviewers.
- Acceptance and production On acceptance the article processing charge becomes payable, at USD 2,100. Production follows: copyediting, typesetting, author proof, DOI registration and open access publication under CC BY 4.0.

What it costs

- Submission
- There is no submission fee. There is no submission fee, and no APC is charged for a rejected manuscript. Withdrawal charges, where applicable, follow the journal’s withdrawal policy.
- On acceptance
- A single article processing charge of USD 2,100, the same for every article type.
- Independence
- Payment and the ability to pay have no influence on peer review, on the editorial assessment, or on the decision. The charge arises only after a decision that was taken without reference to it.
