Before submitting

Preparing the manuscript

• Scope

  Confirm that the physiological question is the subject of the manuscript and that the claims made are supported by the evidence reported.

• Structure

  Organize the manuscript so a reader can follow what was done, under what conditions, and what was observed. Report the methods in enough detail for the work to be evaluated and repeated.

• Title and abstract

  Give the manuscript a title that states its subject, and an abstract that reports the question, the approach and the findings.

• Figures and tables

  Supply figures and tables at a resolution that remains legible in the published article, each with a caption that can be read on its own. Identify any material reproduced from another source and supply the permission for it.

• References

  Cite the sources the work rests on, in a single consistent style, with enough detail for each source to be located.

• Declarations

  Include the disclosures required by the Editorial Policies: authorship contributions, competing interests, funding, ethical approval where applicable, and a data-availability statement for every empirical research manuscript.

• Clinical trials

  Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.

• Double-blind review

  For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.
