Before accepting

Two questions settle whether the invitation is yours to take.

Do you have the subject expertise the manuscript needs, and can you judge the part of it that carries the claim? A partial review, offered as partial, is more useful than a complete one outside your competence.

Do you have an interest that a reader would consider relevant — collaboration, competition, shared funding, a personal relationship? Declare it and decline. Accepting an invitation is a statement that you can assess the work impartially.

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

The review

What to assess

Validity

Do the methods answer the question asked? Are the design, population or system, sample, comparison and analysis capable of supporting the conclusion the authors draw?

Interpretation

Are the conclusions the ones the data support, and no more? Where the authors generalize, does the evidence reach that far? Where they are cautious, is the caution warranted?

Reporting

Is there enough detail to appraise and repeat the work? Are the ethics, registration, data-availability, funding and competing-interest statements present and consistent with the study described?

Scope

Is the question substantively about cervical cancer or the disease process leading to it? Scope is about the subject, not about how important the finding is.

What is not asked of you

Do not require novelty, a positive result, a clinical application or a particular method as a condition of publication. Assess the claim the manuscript makes against the evidence it offers. A careful negative or confirmatory study that is well reported is a publishable result.

Obligations

Confidentiality and conduct

A manuscript under review is confidential and unpublished. Do not share it, cite it, or use its content or ideas in your own work or teaching.

After submitting the review, reviewers should securely delete downloaded manuscript files and must not retain or use unpublished material.

For double-blind manuscripts, reviewers must not attempt to identify the authors.

Reviewers must obtain journal permission before using AI to assist with a review. Any permitted use must be disclosed, and confidential manuscript content must not be uploaded where confidentiality cannot be assured.

Write the review you would want to receive: specific, evidenced, addressed to the work rather than the authors, and clear about which points are requirements and which are suggestions.

Editorial decisions are independent of fees, services, memberships and roles.
