Where the blood is made: research on bone marrow biology

The Journal of Bone Marrow Biology publishes research on all of bone marrow biology: hematopoietic stem cells, the marrow microenvironment, transplantation and marrow disease, across basic, experimental, translational and clinical research.

Aims and Scope

One organ, read at every scale

JBMB covers the biology and clinical science of bone marrow, including basic, experimental, translational and clinical research. The areas below are examples, not a closed list.

  • Hematopoietic stem cells

Self-renewal and differentiation, niche interactions, mobilization and homing, clonal hematopoiesis and aging.

  • Marrow microenvironment

Stromal and mesenchymal cells, vascular and osteoblastic niches, cytokine signaling and the extracellular matrix.

  • Transplantation biology

Engraftment, graft-versus-host disease, HLA matching, conditioning regimens and immune reconstitution.

  • Malignancy and marrow failure

Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma biology, myelodysplastic syndromes, aplastic anemia and inherited marrow disorders.

  • Cell and gene therapy

Gene editing in hematopoietic cells, cellular immunotherapy and marrow-derived cells for regenerative medicine.

  • Tools and translation

Single-cell and spatial methods, imaging and organoid models, biomarkers and clinical outcomes research.

Editorial independence

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. They remain independent of fees, services, memberships and roles.

Standards

Built for careful marrow science

Ethics and reporting

Human-participant studies need ethics approval and informed consent, or a documented ethics-committee waiver; identifiable information needs separate consent. Animal research needs ethics or animal-care approval where applicable and follows recognized welfare standards, with ARRIVE reporting. Authors follow the reporting guideline that fits the study design. See the Editorial Policies.

Open data and preprints

Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. Manuscripts posted as preprints are considered when the posting is disclosed.

Long-term preservation

JBMB articles will be deposited in Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA. Indexing and preservation.
