Overview
Physiology is the branch of biology concerned with the normal functions of living organisms and their parts, spanning molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, and whole-organism levels of organization. It examines how integrated systems, cardiovascular, respiratory, neural, endocrine, muscular, renal, and gastrointestinal, maintain homeostasis through feedback regulation, and how hormones, neurotransmitters, and signaling pathways coordinate responses to internal and external demands. Core themes include the mechanics and energetics of muscular contraction, the regulation of cardiac and circulatory function, thermoregulation and exercise responses, and the cellular and biochemical bases of organ activity, with comparative and integrative physiology extending these principles across species and conditions. Methodologically the field combines in vivo measurement, biophysical and biochemical analysis, and modeling to relate mechanism to function in health and disease. The subject matter examined in this area includes the physiology of distinct modes of muscular contraction, cardiac physiology across reproductive and menopausal states, exercise recovery and cold-versus-warm performance, adipose tissue physiology in relation to obesity, single-ventricle physiology and nutrition, comparative exercise physiology, and the biochemical basis of controlled breathing. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across the breadth of physiological science.
