Sea Ice
Sea ice is frozen seawater found floating in polar oceans. It can range from thin sheets of ice the size of large puddles to large ice floes up to 10 metres thick. Sea ice plays an important role in the global climate system, by reflecting sunlight and moderating temperatures, and by providing a habitat for polar species. It is also used by humans for transportation, as well as providing opportunities for commercial fishing and trade. In some Arctic communities, sea ice is also used for recreation such as ice fishing, snowmobiling, and camping. The changes in sea ice cover due to climate change have far-reaching consequences, making it an important area of study for researchers.
