Overview

Reef growth and ecology is an important study of the interrelatedness of the components of coral reef systems. Coral reefs are among the most productive and diverse marine ecosystems on Earth, providing numerous essential ecosystem services such as coastal protection, fishing grounds, habitat for many species, and sources of nutrients. By understanding how reef growth and ecology interact, scientists and managers can develop better strategies for managing and conserving reefs that can ensure their long-term health. Reef growth and ecology studies can also help inform restoration efforts and allow for the maintenance of healthy coral-diverse reefs. Additionally, understanding the complex relationships between variables related to reef growth and ecology can help scientists and managers predict future changes in coral reef health, allowing for improved conservation measures in the future.
