Pearls

Pearls are organic gems created inside the shell of mollusks. They are formed when an irritant, such as a grain of sand, enters and becomes trapped inside the creature's mantle. The mollusk secretes layers of calcium carbonate, called nacre, as a defense mechanism and over time this builds up and forms the pearl. Pearls come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, from the classic white to black, yellow, and even peach. Pearls have been a symbol of beauty and luxury for centuries, and have been created and used in jewelry, especially necklaces and earrings, for just as long. In the modern world they are still a popular choice for adornment, and their unique look makes them a timeless piece of personal decoration. Pearls are also used in traditional Chinese medicines, as they are believed to have healing powers, and are also used in cosmetics.
