Mycobacterium Ulcerans

Mycobacterium ulcerans is a species of bacteria in the Mycobacteriaceae family. It is best known for causing a severe skin ulcerating disease known as Buruli ulcer. Buruli ulcer is a serious, necrotic skin infection primarily found in humid, tropical areas. It is characterized by painful, non-healing skin ulcers. In areas where it is prevalent, it can be a significant source of disability or even mortality due to its destructive nature. Treatment typically requires a combination of antibiotics and surgery. Surveillance, prevention, and control strategies are needed to reduce the incidence and burden of Buruli ulcer worldwide.
