Overview

The marine environment encompasses the world's oceans and seas together with the organisms, habitats, and physical and chemical processes they contain, ranging from coastal estuaries, lagoons, and coral reefs to the open ocean and deep seafloor. It supports an enormous diversity of life, from microscopic plankton to large fishes and marine mammals, drives global cycles of heat, water, and carbon, and provides food, livelihoods, and other resources to human societies. The marine environment is increasingly affected by human pressures such as overfishing, pollution, underwater noise, habitat loss, and climate change, making its study central to conservation and sustainable management. Within this journal's marine science scope, related research includes work on adopting a wider, ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management; an analysis of factors adversely affecting Atlantic salmon populations using the River Dee in Scotland as an example; and a review of the adverse effects of underwater sound on fishes and invertebrates. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the marine environment and the ecology, management, and protection of ocean ecosystems.
