Fisheries Oceanography
Fisheries oceanography is the science of applying physical, chemical, and ecological principles to understanding and managing fish and fisheries in their original, diverse environments. It encompasses everything from understanding the oceanic and near-coastal environments that support fish populations, to predicting how different factors (for example, ocean warming) will influence the abundance, movement, and behavior of fish, to designing sustainable fisheries management strategies. By better understanding the ecological structures and processes underlying fish populations, fisheries oceanography can improve sustainability, promote better resource management, and reduce conflicts between human activities and the ocean.
