Fisheries
Fisheries are the science, management, and practice of harvesting and utilizing fish and other aquatic organisms from the wild. They are an important source of human nutrition, providing fish and shellfish, a major source of dietary protein and essential omega-3 fatty acids. Fisheries ensure the sustainability of a healthy and productive marine ecosystem, providing employment and contributing to the global economy. Fisheries management includes activities that ensure sustainability, such as reducing bycatch, protecting habitats and managing fishing access to ensure good stewardship of fishery resources. Fisheries provide an important source of food security and livelihoods to millions of people around the world.
