Overview
Surgical excision is the removal of tissue, lesions, or abnormal growths from the body using surgical instruments, typically performed for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Research published in the International Journal of Surgical Techniques on this topic addresses excision across diverse anatomical sites and pathological conditions. Published studies have examined excision techniques for benign and malignant lesions including eccrine porocarcinoma, a rare sweat gland malignancy requiring complete surgical removal, and pleomorphic adenoma of the nasal septum, a benign salivary gland tumor. The journal has documented excision in cases of scrotal epidermoid cysts, lingual cysts, and lacrimal sac inverting papilloma. Additional work has explored excision combined with reconstructive techniques, such as bilobed flap reconstruction following nasal defect creation. Case reports have also addressed excision in complex infectious and inflammatory conditions, including idiopathic granulomatous mastitis, intracranial invasive aspergillosis in immunocompetent patients, and cardiac inflammatory pseudotumors associated with Behçet's disease. This body of work underscores the fundamental role of surgical excision in managing a wide spectrum of pathologies, from routine benign masses to rare and diagnostically challenging entities requiring precise tissue removal for both treatment and histopathological confirmation.
