Overview

Steroidal drugs are medications based on the steroid molecular framework, derived from or designed to mimic hormones the body produces naturally, and they are used across many areas of medicine. They include corticosteroids, which reproduce the actions of adrenal hormones to suppress inflammation and modulate immune responses, and which are used in conditions such as asthma, arthritis, allergic disease, autoimmune disorders, and skin diseases; anabolic and androgenic steroids related to testosterone, used in hormone replacement and selected clinical settings; and sex steroids such as estrogens and progestins used in contraception and hormone therapy. Mechanistically, many steroidal drugs act by entering cells and binding intracellular receptors that regulate gene expression, thereby altering the production of proteins involved in inflammation, metabolism, immune function, and reproductive physiology. Their broad and potent effects make them valuable therapeutics but also account for significant adverse effects with prolonged or high-dose use, including metabolic, immune, and endocrine disturbances, so dosing and duration are carefully managed. Within pharmaceutical science, research on steroidal drugs addresses their synthesis and chemistry, structure-activity relationships, formulation, and the development of agents with improved selectivity and safety. Understanding steroidal drugs spans endocrinology, pharmacology, and therapeutics, reflecting their central role in treating inflammatory, immune, and hormonal conditions.
