Overview
Molecular biology is the study of the structure, function, and interactions of the macromolecules that carry out the fundamental processes of life, principally nucleic acids and proteins, and of the flow of genetic information from DNA through RNA to protein. It draws on biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology and supplies the experimental tools used to analyse genes, transcripts, and gene products. Central techniques include genomic and proteomic profiling, sequencing and the synthesis of nucleic acid libraries, gene-expression and mutation analysis, and mass spectrometry, which together allow researchers to characterise normal cellular processes and the molecular changes that drive disease. These approaches reveal the regulatory roles of newly recognised molecules such as circular RNAs and RNA-binding proteins, define the genetic and molecular features of tumours and inherited disorders, and identify somatic mutations and signalling alterations in cancer. Molecular biology underpins a wide range of biomedical applications, from diagnostics and biomarker discovery to personalised medicine, drug development, and microbial strain identification, and it extends to food safety and evolutionary questions. Research in this field connects molecular mechanism to physiology and pathology, providing the conceptual and methodological foundation for much of contemporary life science.
