Overview

Hormones are signalling molecules secreted by endocrine glands and specialised cells that travel through the bloodstream to act on distant target tissues, coordinating growth, metabolism, reproduction, and the body's response to internal and external change. Chemically diverse, they include steroid hormones such as the sex steroids and adrenal corticosteroids, amino-acid-derived hormones such as the thyroid hormones, and peptide and glycoprotein hormones such as insulin and chorionic gonadotropin. They exert their effects by binding specific receptors that trigger intracellular signal transduction or alter gene expression, often within feedback loops that maintain homeostasis, as seen in the hypothalamic-pituitary axes controlling thyroid and gonadal function. Hormonal regulation is central to many physiological processes and is disrupted in disease: thyroid hormone disturbances accompany obesity and chronic kidney disease, sex steroids govern fertility and reproductive cycles, and exogenous agents such as contraceptive steroids and dietary or environmental compounds can modulate glandular structure and output. The endocrine system also interacts with oxidative status, ageing, and metabolism. Research on hormones spans their biosynthesis and receptor signalling, the consequences of excess or deficiency, and the effects of pharmacological, nutritional, and environmental modulators on endocrine tissues and reproductive function.
