Transmission of HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS is a sexually transmitted virus caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, but can also be spread through contact with infected blood and from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding. The virus destroys the body’s immune system, making it unable to fight off infection and disease. Without treatment, HIV/AIDS can lead to serious health complications and even death. Treatment for HIV/AIDS involves combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) to reduce the amount of the virus in the body and help people with the virus to live longer, healthier lives. It is important to be aware of the risk factors for HIV/AIDS, including unprotected sex and sharing needles and practices such as needle exchange to minimise the spread of the virus. With education and preventive measures, it is possible to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
