Overview

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are infections that are passed from person to person through sexual contact. Adolescents are particularly at risk for STIs as they often engage in unprotected sex as a result of peer pressure, lack of education, or not understanding the risks involved in sex. It is important for adolescents to be aware of the risks of STIs so that they can take steps to protect themselves and their partners. STIs can be prevented through abstinence, having protected sex, getting vaccinated, and regular testing. If left untreated, STIs can cause long-term health issues, including infertility and even death. With appropriate education and testing, STIs can be prevented, treated, and controlled.
