Overview

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also called sexually transmitted infections, are infections passed primarily through sexual contact and caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that can affect the genital tract and other sites. Common STDs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis, genital herpes, human papillomavirus infection, and HIV. Many infections are initially asymptomatic, which facilitates onward transmission and can delay diagnosis; left untreated, they may lead to complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, adverse pregnancy outcomes, increased susceptibility to other infections, and, for certain HPV types, cervical cancer. Prevention relies on barrier methods, vaccination where available, partner notification, and timely testing and treatment, while management depends on the causative organism and may involve antibiotics or antiviral therapy. Because behavior, education, and access to services strongly affect transmission, public-health responses emphasize awareness, screening, and risk-reduction interventions, particularly among adolescents and other vulnerable groups. Research published in this area reflects these themes, including knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices among students and adolescents, the prevalence and epidemiology of infections such as syphilis and laboratory-confirmed STIs, HIV prevention and condom use, cervical screening and abnormal cytology, and the care of survivors of sexual assault and gender-based violence.
