Overview
Behavior therapy is a family of psychological treatments that apply principles of learning—classical and operant conditioning—to modify maladaptive behavior and the thoughts and responses that sustain it. Grounded in the premise that problematic behaviors are learned and can therefore be unlearned or replaced, it uses techniques such as reinforcement, extinction, exposure, systematic desensitization, contingency management, and skills training to reduce symptoms and establish more adaptive patterns. Its cognitive extension, cognitive behavior therapy, additionally targets the appraisals and beliefs that mediate emotion and conduct, and is widely applied to anxiety, depression, and related disorders across age groups, including structured interventions delivered in school settings for children. Behavioral approaches are also central to the management of tic disorders such as Tourette's syndrome, to behavior management for depression and agitation in dementia, and to broader psychosocial interventions in mood disorders. Treatment typically proceeds through functional assessment of antecedents and consequences, goal setting, structured practice, and measurement of outcomes, often within time-limited protocols. Scholarship in this area encompasses controlled and case-based studies of behavioral and cognitive-behavioral methods, their efficacy across clinical populations and conditions, and their integration with educational, medical, and other psychotherapeutic interventions in the treatment of psychological and neurodevelopmental disorders.
