Overview
Behavior refers to the observable actions, reactions, and conduct of organisms in response to internal states and external stimuli, encompassing everything from reflexive responses to complex, goal-directed social and occupational activity. In psychological and clinical science, behavior is studied across multiple levels of analysis: its biological substrates, including neuroendocrine stress responses and cortical regulation; its developmental shaping through early caregiving and attachment; and its modification through structured intervention. A central distinction separates adaptive behavior, which supports functioning and wellbeing, from maladaptive patterns that interfere with health, relationships, or daily life. Research published in this area examines social competence and work-related conduct among health professionals, the influence of maternal caregiving on a child's attachment-related cortisol stress response, and organizational citizenship behavior in occupational settings. Behavioral approaches also feature prominently in treatment, including cognitive behavior therapy applied to anxiety in young patients, behavior management strategies for depression in dementia, and behavioral components of therapy for tic disorders such as Tourette's syndrome. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies spanning the assessment, neurobiological correlates, and therapeutic management of human behavior across clinical, developmental, and workplace contexts, reflecting behavior's central role in psychotherapy practice and research.
