Overview

Pain management is the branch of medicine concerned with the assessment, treatment, and prevention of pain to reduce suffering and improve function and quality of life. It addresses both acute pain, such as that following surgery or injury, and chronic pain that persists over long periods, and it typically takes a multidisciplinary approach that combines pharmacological treatments, interventional procedures, physical therapy, psychological support, and lifestyle modification. Because pain is a complex experience shaped by physical, psychological, and social factors, effective management often requires tailoring strategies to the individual and balancing benefits against the risks of treatments such as opioids. Research published in this journal reflects the breadth of the field, including a novel clinical support system that integrates analgesic dosing with pain trend analysis, the study of new procedures for pain control after total knee arthroplasty using gonyautoxins delivered by single intra-articular infiltration, and a narrative review on creating music-induced analgesia in chronic pain patients through endogenous opioid production. Additional work examines persistent pain following procedures such as lung transplantation and mastectomy. Together these illustrate both interventional and integrative approaches to relieving pain. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to pain management.
