Overview

Vitamin D deficiency is a nutritional and clinical condition in which the body has insufficient levels of vitamin D, a fat-soluble nutrient and hormone precursor obtained through sunlight exposure, diet, and supplementation. Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and therefore for bone mineralisation, and it also contributes to immune regulation and cell growth. Deficiency, commonly assessed by measuring serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), can lead to weakened bones and is studied for its associations with a range of chronic and acute conditions. Risk is increased by limited sun exposure, darker skin pigmentation, older age, obesity, and certain illnesses, and the condition is widespread across many populations. Research examines how vitamin D status relates to bone health, metabolic and chronic disease, immune function, and clinical outcomes in specific patient groups. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies relevant to these themes, including evaluation of vitamin D deficiency in chronic liver disease, the clinical significance of 25(OH)D levels in organophosphorus poisoning and in influenza (H1N1) infection, severe deficiency in patients with type 2 diabetes, serum vitamin D in oral lichen planus, and broader analyses of micronutrient deficiency, situating vitamin D within wider nutritional science and dietary guidance.
