Overview

Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of populations through organized efforts to prevent disease, prolong life, and promote well-being. It operates at the level of communities and populations rather than the individual patient, encompassing the surveillance and control of communicable and non-communicable disease, environmental and occupational health, health promotion and education, nutrition, immunization, and the development of policy and health systems. Public-health action is grounded in epidemiology and the analysis of the social, environmental, and behavioural determinants of health, and it seeks to reduce inequities in health outcomes across groups. Peer-reviewed research in this area examines vitamin A deficiency disorders among preschool children, the impact of climate change on population health, the nutritional status and health outcomes of women and children, data quality in health facilities, partnerships across public-health functions, knowledge and practices relating to cardiovascular disease, the public-health risks of emerging exposures such as e-cigarette use and disease vectors, and the public-health effects of food contaminants such as aflatoxins. Studies employ surveys, surveillance and facility-based data, and review across diverse settings. This work connects population-level determinants and interventions to health outcomes. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research addressing nutrition and public health.
