Overview

Protein nutrition concerns the dietary requirement for protein and its constituent amino acids and their roles in supporting the structure, function, and renewal of the body. Dietary protein supplies the indispensable amino acids that cannot be synthesized endogenously and the nitrogen needed for the synthesis of body proteins, enzymes, transport molecules, and immune components, and it contributes to the maintenance and accretion of skeletal muscle, wound healing, and metabolic regulation. Protein quality depends on amino-acid composition and digestibility, and requirements vary with age, physiological state, physical activity, illness, and the energy adequacy of the diet, since insufficient energy diverts protein toward oxidation. Both inadequate intake, leading to wasting and impaired function, and the optimization of intake in athletes, the ill, and the elderly are central concerns. Peer-reviewed research relevant to this area examines the effect of high-fat, high-protein diets on exercise-induced muscle hypertrophy, the clinical use of peptide-based formulas in paediatric populations, protein and energy-dense nutritional support, nutrition algorithms for children undergoing stem-cell transplantation, the nutritional status of adolescents, and novel protein sources. Studies employ animal models, clinical and observational research, and review across varied settings. This work connects protein and amino-acid intake to muscle, recovery, and metabolic health. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in nutrition addressing protein nutrition, dietary requirements, and clinical nutritional support.
