Overview

Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial condition defined by excessive accumulation of body fat that impairs health, commonly assessed by body mass index and measures of adiposity and fat distribution. It arises from a sustained imbalance between energy intake and expenditure shaped by dietary, behavioral, physiological, genetic, and environmental determinants, and it is a major driver of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. In nutrition science, obesity is studied through the physiology of adipose tissue, dietary and lifestyle interventions, the metabolic consequences of excess adiposity, and the behavioral and cultural context of weight management. The peer-reviewed work in this area reflects these themes, including dietary regimens for the reversal of obesity, the use of hypocaloric Mediterranean and high-fat dietary approaches, the relationship between obesity and conditions such as asthma in adolescents, plant-derived interventions including fennel in experimental models, the influence of low birth weight on later cardiometabolic phenotypes, and the role of behavior modification and cultural context in managing overweight. Studies of adipose-tissue inflammation and prevention knowledge extend this scope. Methods span clinical and dietary intervention, observational and behavioral research, and experimental models. This body of research treats obesity as a modifiable, systemically consequential disorder of energy balance amenable to nutritional, behavioral, and metabolic intervention.
