Overview

Nutraceuticals are food-derived products, or isolated bioactive constituents of foods, that are held to provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition, including a role in the prevention or management of disease. The term, a contraction of nutrition and pharmaceutical, encompasses functional foods, dietary supplements, fortified products, and purified compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and plant extracts. They occupy a conceptual space between food and medicine, and their evaluation concerns the identification of active constituents, their bioavailability and mechanisms, and the evidence for physiological effect. Interest in nutraceuticals reflects growing emphasis on diet in chronic-disease prevention and on personalized approaches to nutrition. Peer-reviewed research in this area examines the concept and classification of nutraceuticals, the demand for functional foods and their health benefits, the application of nutraceuticals in specific conditions, the transition from personalized medication to customized nutrition, and the physicochemical characterization of vitamin and micronutrient compounds. Studies combine review, characterization, and applied investigation across varied contexts. This work connects the bioactive constituents of foods to their potential roles in health maintenance and disease prevention.
