Overview
Health care and a balanced diet describes the role that varied, nutrient-rich eating plays in maintaining health, preventing disease, and supporting the management of medical conditions. A balanced diet supplies adequate energy and the full range of macronutrients and micronutrients the body needs, drawn from a variety of food groups in appropriate proportions. Sound nutrition supports physical and mental well-being, contributes to healthy growth and aging, and is increasingly recognized as a component of clinical care for conditions ranging from cardiovascular and metabolic disease to malnutrition. Research published by the International Journal of Nutrition addresses the principles and applications of balanced eating. Work on the food pyramid sets out the principles of a balanced diet, while studies of functional foods, vegetarianism in food-based dietary guidelines, and the Mediterranean diet and its cultural context examine particular dietary patterns and their health relevance. Further research evaluates a hypocaloric Mediterranean diet in overweight patients, linking dietary approaches to clinical outcomes. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access papers gather evidence relevant to nutrition, dietary patterns, and the place of balanced eating within health care and disease prevention.
