Overview
Endocrinology is the branch of medicine and physiology concerned with hormones, the glands that secrete them, and the disorders that arise when this signaling is disrupted. The endocrine system regulates metabolism, growth and development, reproduction, fluid and electrolyte balance, and the body's response to stress through chemical messengers acting on distant target tissues. Within nutrition, endocrinology is closely tied to the metabolic regulation of glucose, lipids, and energy, and to the hormonal control of appetite and body weight. A major clinical focus is diabetes mellitus, encompassing type 1 and type 2 disease in children, adolescents, and adults, and gestational diabetes, where altered insulin action during pregnancy affects maternal and fetal outcomes. Research addresses the risk factors, screening, and management of these conditions, as well as dietary strategies and the metabolic effects of sweeteners and other nutrients on glycemic control. The field spans the pancreatic, thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and gonadal axes, alongside bone and mineral metabolism and pediatric endocrine growth disorders. Endocrinology integrates clinical assessment, biochemical and hormonal testing, and increasingly digital tools for education and continuous monitoring. By linking hormonal regulation to diet and chronic metabolic disease, it provides the physiological foundation for understanding and managing nutrition-related endocrine conditions.
